Modern lifestyles involve a lot of time spent staring at screens. This is rather stressful on the eyes. But eye stress and health is something that we rarely pay any attention to until we start having problems. It is important to have healthy eye habits to maintain their health and prevent future problems.
Causes Of Eye Problems
  • Eye Fatigue: Staring fixedly at a screen is not good for the eyes. It is the most common reason for short-sightedness. Too much screen time can cause eyestrain, focussing problems, blurred vision, headaches and dry eyes
  • Lighting: Working in improper lighting conditions is a cause of stress to the eyes. Dim lighting causes the eyes to strain. Very bright sunlight is also stressful especially if one is staring fixedly at an object near or far. Spending time outdoors in bright sunlight without protective eyewear is terrible for eye health
  • Lack Of Sufficient Sleep: Not getting enough sleep causes eye strain
  • Improper Diet: Not eating enough of the nutrients that the body requires to maintain good eye health is a cause of eye problems

  • Cataracts: Cataracts can occur in either or both eyes. It happens when the lens of the eye gets cloudy and obscures vision

Eye Health And Problems Described By Ayurveda
The structure of the eye in Ayurveda is defined by the five elements. The earth element (Prithvi) governs the muscular part of the eye, air (Vayu) rules the colour, fire (Tejas) governs the blood vessels, water (Apu) controls the white area, and space (akasha) controls the tear ducts and channels. The Pitta that governs the eye is the Alochaka Pitta. This Pitta has the tendency to get imbalanced as a person ages.
Ayurveda considers eye problems to be caused by
  • Misuse: Too much strain, staring too hard at things or looking at them constantly and looking at the distance constantly cause problems in the eye
  • Emotional Imbalance: Excessive jealousy, anger, anxiety and other negative feelings are believed to manifest as eye problems
  • Suppressing natural urges that include the need to cry, hunger, sleepiness and thirst are not good for eye health
  • Irregular sleep routines and insufficient sleep. Ayurveda does not recommend sleeping during the day. It is advised to sleep by 10.00 pm
  • Stress: Stress is a factor that contributes to health problems with eye problems also being caused by stress
  • The Alochaka Pitta governing the eye decreases with time and causes eye problems as a person ages
  • Alcohol use
  • Spicy food
  • Exposure to irritants and pollution
  • Vata imbalance leads to dry eye and squinting problems
  • Pitta imbalance inflammatory eye problems
  • Kapha imbalance drooping eyelids, cataract and glaucoma.
  • Rapid temperature changes to the eye, for example, splashing cold water, when your entire face is warm
  • Dehydration: Keeping one’s body well hydrated is vital to good eye health
Ayurveda does not treat any problem in the body in isolation. So, when there is a problem in the eyes it is treated as a dosha imbalance that has to be corrected. In addition to the treatment for the eye problem Ayurveda also recommends certain practices to prevent eye problems and maintain good eye health.
 
Ayurvedic practices recommend a routine that includes steps to take care of the eyes first thing in the morning. A person should fill the mouth with water and hold the water in the mouth with eyes closed for a few seconds. Spit out the water and then repeat a couple more times. One should splash one’s eyes with warm water in the morning as well as in the evening after returning home. Care should be taken that the water used in the eye area should be neither too hot nor too cold. If one is overheated after returning home, it is advisable to wait for ten to fifteen minutes so that the body cools down before washing the face. One should not sleep during the day and should maintain a regular sleep and wake schedule to maintain good eye health.
 
There are exercises that aid in the upkeep of good eye health and help to prevent problems. Certain yoga poses are also good for the eyes. Avoid computer fatigue by looking away from the monitor every 30 minutes. Tired eyes can be revived by placing cotton wool soaked in rose water over the eyes for a while. Ayurveda recommends that one has a nutritious diet as well as adequate intake of water to prevent any deficiency of vitamins and minerals or dehydration.
 
Palming is a remedy that has been prescribed by Ayurveda for tired and bloodshot eyes. One should rub one’s palms together for a few seconds to generate warmth in them and then cup them over the eyes. Care should be taken to make the palm into a cup shape with space in between the palm and the eyelids. Block all the light to the eye but avoid pressing on the eyelids. However, if the weather is hot or the eyes are burning, wet cotton pads are recommended. Keep the palm/cotton pads in place and relax and breathe deeply. Try to relax and calm the mind.
 
For specific problems, one should consult an Ayurvedic doctor and use medication. Medication should be used as prescribed. Dietary and lifestyle practices are also prescribed in conjunction with medication to cure problems.
