The vagina is one of the key organs in females as it is the passage from the vulva to the cervix. The vaginal region can have problems like pain, itching, burning, or a sore feeling. This can be the result of an infection or may have other reasons. Whatever may be the cause, it is important not to ignore vaginal pain. Immediate treatment is required to prevent further complications.

Vaginitis is a condition where the vagina becomes sore. This can cause pain, itching, and can even lead to a discharge. This is usually due to an infection. It may be the result of a urinary infection or an infection that is transmitted by sexual intercourse.

Pain in the vagina can be due to different reasons. Sometimes, when there is pressure on the vagina, it causes pain. This condition is known as vulvar vestibulitis. If there is a constant pain that is chronic in nature, it is known as vulvodynia. These conditions would have symptoms like pain, itching, stinging, and discomfort during sexual intercourse.

The causes could vary and may be any of the following:

  • Irritation or injury to the nerves in the vagina.
  • Infection that may be a yeast infection or could be sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea or chlamydia.
  • Allergy to a soap, chemical, or any other substance.
  • Due to the side effects of medication.
  • Hormonal changes in the body.

Ayurveda’s view of vaginal problems

In Ayurveda, vaginitis is related to two different disorders that affect the vagina, known as yoni dahan and yoni kandu. Vaginal infections are one of the main reasons for these problems. According to Ayurveda, these infections occur due to an imbalance in the Kapha and Pitta doshas. Consuming a diet that has sugar and fermented foods increases the dosha. This increases the presence of ama or toxins, which creates an environment where bacteria can flourish.

All the female reproductive problems in Ayurveda are categorized under the head of yoni vypat (or disorders of the vagina). Imbalance in Kapha due to an improper diet where foods that increase Kapha are consumed is one of the reasons. Improper lifestyle with stress and other problems can aggravate Kapha.

This has an impact on the yoni or vagina and leads to various problems. This includes itching or kandu and alpavedana or pain. Excess discharge or leukorrhea is known as shwetapradara. The water in the Kapha dosha becomes vitiated by the toxins. This can cause excess discharge from the vagina.

Excessive sexual activity, improper hygiene, and improper diet are the main causes of problems of the vagina and other reproductive organs in females.

Treatment for this problem includes medicine for vaginal pain. Apart from medicines, other things that can help in reducing pain. These include:

  • Add Triphala powder to water and wash the vagina with this solution.
  • Garlic and turmeric must be used to fight infections.
  • Lemon juice and consuming citrus fruits/juices help to keep the vagina acidic and this helps to keep bacteria in check.
  • A mild soap must be used to wash the vagina. Strong soaps with chemicals can worsen the symptoms.
  • Public swimming pools must be avoided until treatment is complete.
  • A diet that makes use of warm milk, turmeric, spinach, ash gourd, and bottle gourd.
  • Cotton underwear should be worn and tight clothes should be avoided.
  • Exercises to strengthen the pelvic area like Kegels help to strengthen pelvic muscles preventing spasms.
