Joint and bone problems are not limited to people who are old. They have started to affect young people due to their desk jobs and insufficient daily physical activity. Arthritis and cervical spondylitis are two of the most common problems that cause intense pain and affect mobility. While some people who act fast when the early signs develop, others only realize when the problem has become bigger. Muscle pain is another problem that is affecting a large part of the population today. How you find a solution to these problems depends on how severe the problems are.
Causes of cervical spondylitis, arthritis, and muscle pain
Cervical spondylitis can be caused due to herniated discs, bone spurs, and dehydrated spinal discs. Stiffness in the ligaments can lead to cervical spondylitis. If you injured your neck at any point then there are chances that you can have cervical spondylitis. Overuse can lead to cervical spondylitis too.
There are various types of arthritis and the causes of each vary. For example, osteoarthritis can be inherited if you have someone in your family who had it. Degenerative arthritis can occur due to injury. Abnormal metabolism can lead to gout. SLE can be caused due to a dysfunction in your immune system.
The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are not known but some factors can make you prone to it. For example, if you have a family history of someone with RA then your chances of getting it to increase. If you are a woman then you are more likely. Some triggers of RA include smoking, exposure to certain bacteria, obesity, trauma, and history of viral infections.
Muscle pain can be caused due to medication, injuries, sprains, dystonia, muscle cramps, influenza, hypothyroidism, and rheumatoid arthritis. Muscle pain can be a result of overworking particular muscles, tension, and stress. Polymyalgia rheumatica, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Fibromyalgia, and Dermatomyositis can all lead to muscle pain.
Ayurveda’s approach to bone and joint health
Ayurveda says that proper digestion is what is at the root of optimal health. When digestion is affected, then so is your health. When the agni or the digestive fire is strong, then digestion takes place optimally and there are no health problems. However, when the agni is weakened then it can eventually cause problems such as bone-related issues and joint disorders. Only when the tissues are getting proper nutrition can the bones and joints in your body thrive. Else, things can get out of balance leading to smaller problems first and then to more serious problems.
Two problems can occur. The first problem occurs when improper nutrition is being given to tissues or there is not enough nutrition that the tissue is getting. When this happens then slowly and steadily the tissues become deprived of the nutrition they need and this can cause a lot of trouble. It affects the agni in the tissues and as the problem progresses it affects the deep tissues. One of the problems that can occur is that the joints will become dry and they will become stiff. They will crack more easily than ever before and this can cause a lot of damage to the tissues.
In the second case, any excess in any of the doshas results in excess ama or toxins. Then vata transports the ama to colon since it is the most active of the three doshas and it is its job to do so. Since the digestive fire is weak at this point, ama is on the lookout for a weak space that it can occupy and affect. If agni in the tissues of the joints and bones is affected or weakened, then ama can go there because agni cannot protect the tissues anymore. Ama can then cause problems in bones and joints because it has found a place to stay. This can lead to inflammation of the bones and joints as well as the bones becoming weak.
When you want to remove ama and strengthen the digestive fire then you can start with having triphala since it helps balance the three doshas. It helps in the detoxification process and enables you to nourish your body from within. You can give proper nutrition to the bone tissue by consuming foods rich in vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin K. You should ensure you are always hydrated by drinking warm water or water at room temperature. Certain yoga positions and exercises are particularly useful for relief from bone and joint problems. However, these depend on your age and the severity of the problem.
