Ayurveda is based on the principles of the three Doshas; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These three Doshas in balance enhance the good health of a person whereas when they are out of balance they cause health problems that correspond to the Dosha that is out of balance. Vata is the Dosha that is more closely related to air. It’s also the Dosha that in excess can cause dry skin conditions. Ayurveda treats Vata Dosha skin problems through both external and internal means. A combination of the external application of oils and Ayurvedic preparations are complemented by the intake of herbal preparations as well as a proper diet.

Western Medicine And Healing Dry Cracked Areas Of Skin
-
When there is a wound on the skin the healing process takes place in four phases.
- The first phase is when the body attempts to stop bleeding and form a clot to seals the bleed
- The body then tries to fight any potential infection at the site. The platelets secrete chemicals that are the cause of inflammation at the wound site. More white blood cells are sent to the area and they eliminate bacteria and any threats that could cause infection
- The white blood cells also secrete chemicals that speed up the repair of damaged tissue in the area. This phase is marked by added redness, pain and swelling at the site
- The body then starts making new skin in the last healing phase
- Chapped lips are a common and uncomfortable condition. It’s called cheilitis. Since the skin on the lips is thinner and drier than the rest of the skin they are prone to get dry easily. The lips also do not have any oil glands which makes them more prone to drying out.
- Habits such as smoking, getting overexposed to extreme cold or sun, licking the lips or using the worn products on the lips can worsen the problem. Dehydration and medications that cause the body to become dehydrated can cause dry and chapped lips.
- There are two reasons for cracked nipples. One could be that a baby is not able to latch on properly and the improper pressure on the breast is causing soreness and eventually cracking of the nipples. If using a breast pump the funnel should not irritate the nipple area of the breast. Sometimes, eczema-like conditions, infections of the skin or irritants such a cosmetics used can cause sore and cracked nipples.
- Cracked heels are heels that have a thick layer of dry skin that develops cracks or fissures. It’s at the very least uncomfortable but can lead to serious infections.
