About Amritarishtam

Amritarishta is also known as Amrutarishta, Amritarishtam etc.It is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine prepared from Giloy, Dashmul, Trikatu and many other ingredients.Amritarishta contains about 5 – 8 % of self generated natural alcohol in it. This self generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble the active herbal components to the body.

Amritarishtam Indications

Fevers & Infections

Amritarishtam is mainly recommendable in low grade fevers or chronic fevers in which patients experience fatigue, loss of strength, body pains, loss of interest and restlessness. It helps mitigation of all these symptoms. Additionally, it helps to release toxins (called AMA in ayurveda), which are responsible for the inflammation and occurrence of fever.  It is beneficial for reducing symptom like burning sensation in the whole body, heat sensation, restlessness, body aches, and fatigue.Along with other medicines for infections, it reduces span of fever and boosts recovery from associated infections. It enhances non-specific immunity and increase immune intelligence, which aids fighting off infections.The mild antipyretic action of Amrutharishtam also helps reduce fever.  Accompanying with Praval Pishti, its antipyretic action increases and works like modern antipyretic medicines.After fever and infections, it helps restoring the strength, reduces physical weakness and improves appetite.

Typhoid Fever

In typhoid fever, Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia) in Amritarishta inhibits the growth of salmonella typhi bacteria and reduces antigen titer. Its use along with Vasant Malti Ras can also help to reduce tendency of becoming chronic carriers of typhoid fever. Along with other ayurvedic medicines, it is useful in the treatment of typhoid fever. It is also helpful in debility that occurs after typhoid fever and helps clearing the toxins developed in the body.


Amritarishtam can provide relief from acute and chronic cough. It helps to loosen the mucus in the bronchi and bronchioles and assists in its expulsion thus relieving congestion in the throat and chest. It also reduces fever associated with the respiratory conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, and laryngitis. It eases breathing by opening up the air passages by inducing relaxation of the muscles in the airways. It produces a soothing effect on the throat and relieves pain and irritation. The antibacterial properties of the herbs used in this medication help in destroying the bacteria causing infection. It also allows the person to sleep peacefully by relieving cough at night. This has a favorable effect on the damaged lung tissues, which get enough time to repair thus hastening the recovery of the patient.


Amritarishtam can work well for treating common cold. It produces an anti-allergic action, which helps to modify the response of the body to the allergens like dust and environmental toxins thus reducing the likelihood of an attack of allergic rhinitis. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and relieves congestion in the nose caused by swelling and an excessive production of mucus in response to the exposure to allergens. It also strengthens the immune system thus allowing it to counter the action of allergens on the nasal tissues. Regular use of Amritarishtam can help in reducing the intensity and frequency of the attacks of allergic rhinitis.

Loss of Appetite

Amritarishtam regulates gastric secretions and increases appetite. Its digestive stimulant properties also help to improve digestion of food and reduce AMA formation. It is highly beneficial in cases of poor appetite due to chronic illness or infections.


Giloy (Tinospora) has hematogenic action, so Amritarishtam helps to improve the blood formation and increase hemoglobin level in the blood. According to ayurveda, it works on RANJAKA PITTA and improves its quality, which helps to increase hemoglobin level. For best results, it can be used along with Dhatri Loha or Punarnava Mandur.

Joint disorders

Amritarishtam has been found to be useful in the treatment of arthritis. It works by producing a strong anti-inflammatory action. It reduces swelling and pain in the joints and thus, improves their mobility. It also acts as an antioxidant and prevents damage to the joint tissues caused by free radicals. It protects the joints from the age-related wear and tear and improves their longevity. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lumbar spondylosis, and osteomyelitis. It helps in treating rheumatoid arthritis by correcting the faulty immune system response that can cause considerable damage to the joint. It helps in treating osteomyelitis, an infective condition affecting the bones, with its antibacterial properties.

Bile Deficiency & Liver Disorders

Amritarishtam increases the secretion of bile from the liver and gall bladder. It also acts liver stimulant, which improves liver functions and improve digestion and assimilation of the food.

Chronic Pruritus (Itchy Skin)

Ruling out the underlying cause of pruritus helps in proper treatment of it. Amritarishtam helps detoxifying the blood, eliminates the toxins from the skin, and improves liver and kidney functions. If any of anemia, liver diseases, malabsorption, dry skin, dermatitis, seasonal change or chickenpox is the cause of chronic pruritus, Amritarishtam helps a lot.

Amritarishtam Dosage

  •  12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day, usually advised after food.
  • If needed, equal quantity of water can be added before consumption.

 Precautions For Amritarishtam 

  • Safe in lower doses for kids above 3 years of age. Accidental over-dosage should be strictly avoided.

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Best to avoid during pregnancy, however can be taken after consulting doctor. Can be taken during lactation period, after consulting doctor.


  • As jaggery is one of the ingredients, it should be not be used in diabetes.


  • Due to its sour taste, it should be avoided in hyperacidity and ulcers.


  • Amritarishtam may worsen the conditions in the case of ulcers or ulcerative colitis. 

Amritarishtam is prepared using natural herbal ingredients. Hence, it does not cause any serious side effects. It may cause a few mild adverse effects like gastric irritation when it is used in very high doses. Patients with diabetes are advised to use this medicine with caution as it contains jaggery, which can increase the blood sugar levels.
