Ayurvedic Perspective On Cholesterol Problems
In Ayurveda, the digestive process is most important for maintaining good health in a person. Digestion depends on Agni or the digestive fire. When this process is inefficient a metabolic waste product called Ama is formed. The metabolization of the food is by the Bhut Agnis in the liver. The metabolised food is transformed into Rasa or nutritive fluid. This then transformed into the Dhatu Agnis that are in the seven tissues of the body. Lipids in the body are Meda Dhatu. The sequence of transformation is  Rakta (blood plasma), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow), and Shukra (reproductive fluid). Any Ama that is formed is in the Rasa and gets added to the Dhatus. This causes the Ama in fat tissue to be accumulated in both the Rakta and Mamsa Dhatus.
When the Meda Dhatu is not balanced it causes the stiffness, clogging, and distortion of the Rakhtavati Shrotas or blood vessels. This causes high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So We see that it is the Ama that is the cause of cholesterol problems. The liver health should be supported in order to ensure that the Ama gets filtered out.

Hypercholesterolemia - An Overview
Hypercholesterolemia means high cholesterol levels with the prescription of cholesterol-lowering drugs with dietary and lifestyle changes. Some of the drugs used are Statins, Fibrates, Niacin, Bile Acid Sequestrants, and Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors. The Statins lower blood cholesterol levels by blocking the liver from making cholesterol. The side effects include diabetes, liver problems, and muscle aches.
