Ayurvedic Perspective on Respiratory Disorders
  • Breathing disorders are called Swasa Roga in Ayurveda.
  • Breathing involves the Vata and Kapha Doshas.
  • The Vata Dosha is cold, rough and dry in nature while the Kapha Dosha is cold, heavy and slimy.
  • When there is an aggravation or imbalance of these two Doshas in the digestive system and the Kledaka Kapha, it creates problems in the lungs. The lungs get blocked and clogged causing bronchitis.
  • When the Pitta Dosha is increased, it reduces the excessive Kapha Dosha and helps the body to decongest the respiratory system. So we see that the lung issues actually originate in the digestive system. So, the treatment starts by ensuring that the digestive fire Agni is at its best.
  • When the digestive fire strength is poor, the digestive and metabolic process is inefficient and causes the formation of the metabolic waste called Ama.
  • The Ayurvedic name for bronchial asthma is Tamaka Swasa. Ayurveda defines the cause of this problem as the intake of excessive Kapha Dosha aggravating foods, suppression of natural urges, excessive exercise or sexual activity, cold climate, allergens or physical trauma to the throat or chest.
  • Problems with the upper respiratory tract can also be caused by allergic reactions or infections.
  • An Ayurvedic doctor would prescribe Ayurvedic treatment for bronchitis, cold or cough along with appropriate dietary recommendations to bring the Doshas back into balance.
  • When it comes to Ayurvedic medicine for asthma bronchitis, Ayurveda takes a holistic view of a person’s health. Ayurveda defines five Koshas in a person; the Anamaya Kosha (the physical body), Manomaya Kosha (the mind), Vijnanamaya Kosha (the psyche), Pranaymaya Kosha (the breath body), and the Anandamay Kosha (the bliss body).  When there is a balance between these Koshas, it is good for overall health.
  • Asthma is a condition that is caused by a disturbance in all the Koshas. The difficulty in breathing is caused by the blockage of the Prana. The physical body is linked to the psyche and the bliss body. So, when there are feelings of depression, stress, anger or other psychological issues, it can aggravate asthma. In addition to taking medication for bronchitis, one must also keep a positive state of mind.

Respiratory Disorders
As per studies when the viruses that cause flu and colds irritate the lining of the nose it causes inflammation and the subsequent symptoms of running nose and sneezing. Cough is the body’s natural reflexive action to expel a foreign particle or irritants that have gone into the airway. When there is an infection, the lining of the airways get affected and irritated triggering a cough. When there is mucus formation, it irritates the nerve endings in the airways and leads to a productive cough. The inflammation of the bronchial tubes leads to bronchitis and it is usually caused by viruses. Bacteria, fungi or viruses can cause infection in the lungs called pneumonia.
