People all over the globe are affected by skin diseases as it is one of the most common types of diseases. While some people may have acne, others have skin disorders such as eczema. Skin is the largest organ of the body. Skin disorders affect people physically and emotionally. Joint problems are another cause of concern because they affect a large part of the global population. If any of these problems are left without treatment then they can lead to a host of other disorders.

Causes of eczema, acne, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis

Acne is caused due to excess oil production. It can be caused due to bacteria and an excess of androgens. It can be caused when hair follicles are clogged by dead skin cells or oil. Acne can be caused by certain medications, sweat, heat, and topical cosmetics too. Stress, diet, hormones, and medications can worsen acne.

Eczema can be caused due to various environmental factors such as allergens, irritants, and microbes. It can be caused by extreme temperatures. Certain foods can lead to eczema flare-ups such as eggs and soy products. Stress and hormones can lead to eczema. It can be hereditary. For some people, exposure to certain household products can lead to eczema.

Gout is caused due to a buildup of uric acid in your blood. There are some conditions such as dehydration or metabolic disorders that can lead to excess uric acid. Inherited disorders often make it difficult for your body to get rid of uric acid which can lead to a buildup causing gout. Thyroid problems or kidney problems can lead to gout too.

Rheumatoid arthritis’s exact cause is not known. However, doctors believe that when the joints’ tissues called the synovium are attacked by the immune system then the result is rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking, old age, family history, obesity, and the environment can cause rheumatoid arthritis.

Ayurveda’s approach to skin disorders and joint problems

The skin is exposed throughout the day and it saves us from the toxins in the environment. According to Ayurveda chronic skin disorders such as eczema and acne are due to internal imbalances. These imbalances are a result of toxin accumulation in the body particularly the liver, blood, and lungs. The rakta dhatu and rasa dhatu are usually responsible for skin problems and diseases in most people. People with excess of any doshas such as pitta, vata or kapha can have skin disorders.  Hence ayurvedic remedies for pacifying these are useful for remedying the excesses.

Acne is quite common. It is caused by vata and kapha imbalance along with impurities that are found in the blood. You can get relief from acne by using turmeric and ginger when you cook your meals. You should avoid cold or oily foods as these can further aggravate acne. Light foods and warm foods will help heal acne-related problems. Foods such as almonds, asparagus, fresh coriander, spinach, and beetroots help to detoxify the skin to make it healthy. Eating quinoa can help keep skin disorders like acne at bay. Manjistha herb helps too.

According to Ayurveda, there are two major types of joint problems that can occur due to imbalance in the doshas. The vyana vata can result in joint weakness which can cause a bone fracture or inability for the joints to move. The second type of joint problem is caused due to an excess of ama or toxins in the body. In this, the joints swell and are quite painful due to inflammation. The excess ama causes problems in the lubrication of the joint which causes more problems such as difficulty in circulation. This can restrict the movement of the joints and can cause trouble when walking.

Ayurveda states that if you have vyana vata excess then you should take measures to pacify vata. This includes having all 6 tastes in your meals. However, note that you should put a limit on how much pungent, bitter, and astringent foods you are having. You can do mild exercise and cook grains such as quinoa in water with ghee. For ama-related joint problems, you should include ama reducing spices and use them when you are preparing your meals. You can include half an hour of exercise in your routine for reducing ama from your body entirely. Having a routine will help too.
