Improper digestion impacts a person’s overall health. The nutrients in food are better absorbed only when the digestive process is good. Indigestion also affects one’s ability to comfortably perform everyday tasks. When indigestion becomes extreme it can even make a person weak and tired. Bloating and gas also make a person uncomfortable most of the time. 
 
Causes Of Stomach Discomfort And Indigestion
Digestion depends on two main factors. One is the digestive process and the other is the food that is eaten. More serious problems can be because of ulcers, gall bladder issues or other problems with the digestive system. Some stomach and digestive problems are caused by the bacterial infection of the stomach lining. Certain foods can also trigger stomach discomfort and indigestion. This can be in the form of gas, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation. Gas is naturally present in a smaller amount in all digestive tracts but some people are more prone to having belly bloat and gas.
Autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis and Crohn’s disease also cause digestive issues. People who have irritable bowel syndrome or IBS have digestive problems that vary from diarrhoea to constipation. 
Though gas is naturally present in the digestive tract, it becomes painful when it accumulates. It’s sometimes triggered by eating certain foods. It might be accompanied by constipation or diarrhoea.
When the stomach issues are caused by bacterial infections, Western medicine treats it with antibiotics. Gastritis is treated with medication to protect the stomach lining from damage and also relive the pain that accompanies the condition. 
When the stomach is too acidic this results in a host of related problems. There is a burning sensation felt in the mouth, throat and upper stomach sometimes resulting in reflux and heartburn problems. This could be because of a stomach problem or the ingestion of foods that are too acidic. The acidic environment can also cause stomach ulcers. If this is a rare occurrence when one has eaten acidic food it can be ignored. But frequent bouts of acidity or indigestion should be investigated and treated. The pancreas, liver, and gallbladder can all impact the person’s digestion when they have problems. So, when stomach problems are chronic, all these related organs are investigated as well.  Problems with the large intestine such as diverticulosis can also cause stomach issues. 
Dietary choices have a great impact on the health of the stomach and the gut. When one eats a balanced diet with an adequate intake of water the digestive system functions smoothly and properly. Food that is rich in natural fiber keeps the gut healthy. It’s important that the flora in the digestive tract is normal. This is encouraged by eating enough pro and prebiotics. Eating at regular meal times makes digestion easier for the stomach. If one has a known sensitivity to a certain food that triggers stomach issues that food should be avoided. Bad habits such as drinking too much coffee, tea, alcohol or carbonated drinks should be avoided. Acidic foods should be avoided when one has a tendency to have acidity problems. Plenty of exercises is also essential for healthy digestion. Travel and sudden changes of schedule that disrupt the body’s mealtimes play havoc with the digestive system.  
If a person is taking medication for some other health issue, the side effects of the medication should be investigated. Some drugs impair digestion or cause digestive problems. 
 
Ayurveda And Digestion
Digestion is one of the most important processes at the heart of the principles of Ayurveda. When a person has proper digestion there is no metabolic waste. However, a poor digestive process generates metabolic waste called Ama that is the root cause of many diseases. When the Ama is present in the body for a longer period of time it becomes the more dangerous form of Ama called Ama Visha that causes more serious problems. The quality of digestion is dependent on the quality of the digestive fire called Agni. The Agni in a person’s body is not constant all the time. It fluctuates with the movement of the sun. Agni is at its highest at noon and at its lowest at night. This makes it hard for the body to digest heavy meals that are eaten late at night. Modern lifestyles make lunch a hurried meal and people tend to eat or snack at all times of day or night depending on their work schedule. This causes problems with digestion. 
Ayurveda also advises that one should not suppress natural urges. So one should be able to burp, pass gas or empty their bladder or bowels when the urge strikes. Suppressing these urges causes problems with digestion. Eating food that is too cold, eating over-processed and fried food also causes the digestive process to be strained. The flow of the food through the digestive system and elimination of the waste is governed primarily by the Vata Dosha. The Vata dosha imbalance causes gas formation and bloating in the stomach area. The affliction of this Dosha is usually the main culprit in digestive issues. Pitta Dosha is a hot and drying Dosha and when this is aggravated it can cause issues with constipation. Kapha Dosha problems can cause excessive mucus formation that also impairs digestion. So balancing the three Doshas is very important for digestion. Being sedentary and not getting enough exercise also cause the digestion to be inefficient. So one should get adequate exercise to avoid digestive problems.
