All of us are susceptible to feeling low on our energy at the end of the day. We fall victim to our daily hustle and grind that cause exhaustion and drain our energy. However, do you find this to be a recurring problem for you despite getting ample rest? Do you still feel sluggish? Finding your concentration drop repeatedly even though you have tried to amend your sleeping patterns?

If all of the above symptoms keep prevailing despite all of your efforts to overcome it, it is incredibly likely that you have a high iron deficiency or you are anaemic. We will be looking in-depth into what causes iron deficiency in our bodies, in terms of our general health and also through the perspective of Ayurveda as well the benefits of this iron syrup.

In this day and age of swift innovation based on convenience, it is important to remind ourselves that the herbal remedies of our ancestors still hold weight . With the right amount of information and knowledge about the herbs mentioned below, we can leverage it to benefit our health. But before that let us look at what causes Anaemia.

Causes

Anaemia is the most common disorder which affects our blood when we are low on iron. It can create the condition of having less number of red blood cells, also known as hemoglobin, which can lead to less number of red blood cells carrying oxygen throughout our bodies. It can originate through less consumption of iron in our diets or it can be due to the inability of our bodies to absorb iron. In extreme cases, it will eventually lead to a serious vitamin B12 deficiency.

Various skin disorders and health disorders may arise due to iron deficiency and it will lead an individual to be anemic. Pregnant women who do not take enough supplements might experience anemia as well.

Ayurveda Perspective

Let us look at the condition of an iron deficiency in our blood through the lens of ‘Ayurveda’. Remedies have been borne centuries advanced our times for iron deficiency and anemia

The term ‘Rakta Dhatu' refers to the primary fire of the body. The word Rakta means coloured or also ‘reddened'  i.e., It refers to our blood in terms of health, specifically our red blood cells. When rakta dhatu is in excess, the heat in our bodies will increase and cause tissues in the body to possibly experience inflammation. This causes the mind to experience a higher intensity and sharper focus. When it gets overheated, it results in the liver and spleen possibly becoming enlarged. This will lead to conditions and diseases such as hepatitis. Excess heat in our bodies will manifest through rashes on our skin, increase in the frequency of urination and bowel movements increase, causing the stools to become loose. The body will then try to fight this through an increase in sweat. If this excess heat cannot be removed, then it will result in heavy burning sensations, resulting in inflammation and fever.

Lifestyle choices that can increase rakta dhatu are intense intellectual studying, over-exercising, malnutrition as well as if we include extra-spicy food in our diets. All of this will eventually lead to burnout in our energy or fatigue. In women, an increase in rakta dhatu can intensify their menstrual flow but only for a few days. This will lead to intense mood swings. As heat builds through the body, joint and skin inflammation conditions are experienced.

When rakta dhatu is drained and depleted from our bodies, it will cause one to feel cold, causing the skin to turn pale or dark grey. This coldness will cause the body to cling on to more heat by reducing urination and sweat. In our minds, this will manifest in the form of dullness and difficulty in processing new information, i.e., issues with concentration, consequentially leading to possible confusion and misunderstanding. Lifestyle choices that lead to a decrease in rakta dhatu are laziness, a lack of exercise, imbalanced or bland diet a disinterest in intellectual discussion or exploration.

The rakta dhatu is also tied together with the Manipura chakra in our body. This is responsible for feelings of passion, focus, logic and reasoning. When rakta dhatu is healthy and balanced, the above feelings are healthy and balanced as well in the individual.

Rakta dhatu is also closely related to our digestion and subsequent diet.

In order to evaluate the health of the rakta dhatu, the blood should not just be tested but also evaluated. Upon a blood test being done, the red blood cell count tells of the quantity of rakta dhatu that is present in the body and bloodstream. The morphology, shape of the cell as well as the levels of hemoglobin are indicators of the quality.

Anemia is called Panduroga which translates as the disease of pallor. This is because the lack of blood makes the person look paler than normal. The human body is governed by the three Doshas called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The Pitta Dosha is the dosha that primarily governs the blood. So, when a person has anemia the Pitta Dosha is involved. It is usually linked to the liver and its disorders. Ayurveda defines the mixing of the blood with bile to be a cause of the blood thinning thus causing anemia.

The Vata Dosha can also cause anemia problems as a part of an overall problem of malnourishment and weakness. This is an issue that affects all the tissues of the body. The person is seen to have sleep problems, anxiety, dehydration, constipation as well as a dark tinge to the skin. Anemia caused by Kapha Dosha usually occurs due to the clogging up of the channels due to excessive phlegm, or fat in the body. This type of anemia also causes excessive salivation, phlegm and noticeable pallor in the skin as well as the urine. The person will feel very tired, have heavy limbs, and sleep too much. While the Vata type anemia is characterised by malnourishment, the Kapha type of anemia is accompanied by obesity, congestion, and water retention or edema. The nutrition of the blood is blocked by phlegm and excessive fat.

Ayurvedic texts describe an anemic person as looking dull and pale. There is tiredness, low-grade fever, yellowish urine, irregular bowel movements, and vertigo. For women, there will be a lack of menstrual flow or pale menstrual flow. Anemia can be triggered by poor lifestyle choices and bad habits. Sour and salty tastes are known to aggravate the  Pitta and the blood and can cause anemia. A diet that is not nourishing and the abuse of alcohol are also known to cause anemia. For women, conditions, and issues that cause excessive bleeding are also known to cause anemic conditions. Too much heat in the blood or issues with the liver is also defined as triggers of anemia as per Ayurvedic principles.

Ayurveda recommends the treatment of anemia through a diet that is rich with nutrition and herbs that rectify the blood disorder. A person is also told to take medication that can treat iron deficiency. Since these supplements often cause problems with constipation, Ayurvedic supplements for anemia also incorporate herbs that aid and support digestion. Some of the food that is to be added to the diet are grapes, almonds, moong dal, and pomegranate. When the anemia is accompanied by general debility, Ayurvedic Chyawanprash is also prescribed as nutritive support.
