Ayurveda And Cough And Cold
Respiratory problems such as cough and cold are called Swasa Roga. The two doshas that are primarily involved in respiratory infections are the Vata and Kapha Doshas. The Vata Dosha is cold and dry in nature and this causes breathing problems. The Kapha Dosha is heavy, cold, and slimy and causes excessive mucus and resulting congestion. Ayurveda classifies all respiratory problems under the label of  Swasa Roga.
The Dosha imbalance is triggered in the digestive system of the person. Excessive mucus formation and congestion is a process that starts in the Kledaka Kapha in the digestive system. When this affects the lungs it causes excess mucus formation that irritates the nerve endings in the bronchial tubes. This causes a reflex cough to remove the irritant.
Ayurvedic treatment for cough and cold increases the hot Pitta Dosha in the body to balance the Vata and Kapha. Productive cough treatment is by the administration of antitussive herbs. The diet and medication support the Agni or digestive fire in order to ensure proper digestion and the Dosha balance is regained. The intake of appropriate foods is important to combat cough and cold.
Bronchial asthma is referred to as Tamaka Swasa in Ayurveda. It is caused by the intake of excessive Kapha Dosha aggravating foods, cold climate,  irritants, physical trauma to the throat or chest, suppression of natural urges, excessive exercise, or sexual activity. Lifestyle habits must also be changed to keep the Doshas in balance.

Cough And Cold - An Overview
Coughs and colds are usually the results of a viral infection. The virus irritates the lining of the breathing passages and there is excessive mucus produced. The foreign substances also trigger coughing as a reflex to expel the mucus. This causes a productive cough. When the infection or allergies cause inflammation in the bronchial tubes it causes bronchitis. Running nose, cold, and cough are treated with medications such as antihistamines to ease the symptoms. Cough is treated with antitussives, cough suppressants, decongestants, and expectorants.
As colds are caused by viruses, antibiotics are not helpful. Sometimes a fever is also a symptom of cold and cough infections and is treated with antipyretics. The resultant body pain is treated with rest and analgesics. When a cold is accompanied by a bacterial infection it can cause more symptoms and a lung infection that can be treated with antibiotics. Cold treatment is also supported with home remedies and a diet that is nutritious, soothing, and warming in nature. People with weaker immune systems are more susceptible to cough and colds. Colds are more common in colder weather. This is attributed to the fact that more people stay indoors and closer to each other in cold weather.
