Biogest Tablet

Synopsis:

Biogest Tablets from Kerala Ayurveda help safeguard your body from recurrent infections, thanks to a perfect balance of naturally occurring ingredients like Haritaki and Bibithaka.

Recurrent infections like the common cold, throat infections and upper respiratory tract infections can make it difficult for both children and adults to function properly in their daily lives. You may find yourself taking time out from work or school too often, your energy levels could come down and you may experience a feeling of general malaise. Multiple visits to your doctor, over-the-counter medications and home remedies may not solve the problem. You need a more holistic approach.

Doctors estimate that the average adult gets at least 2-3 colds in a year, while children may fall prey to as many as 10-12. Recurrent infections are also known as re-infections. They are infections that re-appear after a course of therapy has been completed and stopped. Sometimes, they appear with a different strain or serological type of the initial microorganism that caused the original infection.

The symptoms include runny nose, congestion, cough, sore throat, body aches, tiredness, fever and chills, breathing difficulties etc.

Causes of Recurrent Infections

There could be a range of causes for recurrent infections:

  • Some people have a genetic predisposition to contract recurrent infections.
  • Older people and children have weaker immune systems. If you have just recovered from another infection, you’re more likely to catch a second one due to lowered immunity.
  • Smoking or living with someone who smokes can increase your chances of getting frequent respiratory infections.
  • Working conditions can play a major role in the body's vulnerability. For instance, if you work in an environment that has substances that irritate your lungs like chemicals, fine powdery dust, fumes, or you work around animals or certain kinds of plants, in damp conditions, or environments that contain mould and fungi, you could experience frequent problems.
  • Exposure to airborne viruses is the primary cause of respiratory infections. These are known as droplet infections and are highly contagious. There are estimated to be at least 200 different types of cold virus.
  • Sneezing, coughing, inadequate washing of hands, poor hygiene, sharing towels, shaking hands and using faucets, pens, computers, phones, door/drawer handles that have been touched by those with an infection are ways in which the viruses spread.
  • Traveling in planes and closed vehicles along with a person who is already infected can result in an infection.
  • Movie theatres are notorious for spreading infections.
  • Seasonal changes can make people less able to resist infections. A sudden drop or rise in temperature, humid conditions, ice-cold or steamy-hot showers when the temperature outside is the opposite, could reduce your resistance.
  • Most respiratory infections occur in the cold season where you’re more likely to spend time indoors with people who may be infected. Cold weather causes dryness of nasal passages that encourages growth of microorganisms. Perspiration and excessive sun exposure create conditions for tiredness and low immunity.
  • Back to school colds and respiratory infections are common during the opening of school terms when children quickly “catch” a virus that’s doing the rounds among them.
  • Feeling emotionally distressed or extremely fatigued can leave you vulnerable to infections.
  • Lack of sleep, going on crash diets, malnutrition and vitamin deficiency may result in low immunity to infections.
  • Immuno-compromised patients undergoing treatment for other illnesses could be more prone to develop recurrent infections.

Ayurveda’s View on Recurrent Infections

Developed in the Indian subcontinent more than 3000 years ago, Ayurveda (meaning the knowledge of life and longevity) is a holistic healing system based on maintaining homeostasis between mind, body and spirit. Promoting good health rather than fighting disease is the primary approach of this system.

Today, the system has become more globalized and modernized with regard to practices as it has traveled far beyond its place of origin. Modern Ayurveda is often integrated into wellness and general health applications as well as performing specific medical functions.

According to this system, every human being is made of five elements: air, water, fire, earth and space which combine in the body in the form of three doshas. These three fundamental substances or bio-elements exist in every human body and govern the ideas of health and well-being. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Good health exists when there is a balance between these three.

These three elements govern the conditions of growth, health and disease. In human beings, generally one of these elements tends to dominate, and it is what determines the person's body type, personality, constitution, mental make-up etc. Ayurvedic treatments focus on the diagnosis of imbalance, deficiency or excess of any of the doshas.

For instance, an excess of Vata creates conditions for mental, digestive and nervous disorders, low energy, body weakness, etc.

Excess Pitta gives rise to toxic blood conditions, susceptibility to infections and inflammations.

Excess Kapha causes weight gain, excess production of mucus, oedema, lung diseases etc.

Each one of these elements has its sub-doshas that govern different parts of the body, bodily functions and emotions.

To counterbalance the effects of the doshas, the healing forces of Prana (for Vata), Tejas (for Pitta) and Ojas (for Kapha) exist.

Prana promotes enthusiasm, creativity and adaptability, Tejas is related to courage, fearlessness and insight, while Ojas promotes peace, confidence, patience and ability to sustain effort.

Ojas is considered to be the most vital of all, as it promotes physical and psychological resilience.

Recurrent respiratory infections of the lungs involve the Vata and Kapha doshas and their several sub-doshas.

The concept of kaala or seasons/periods in life is another fundamental building-block of Ayurvedic thought. There are three primary stages in life: Bala, Madhya and Jirna (or Vriddhavasta). Children and young adults in the Bala stage where Kapha predominates and agni is low. Older people are in the Jirna stage where Vata predominates which is characterized by agni imbalance, causing less ability to handle the stress of any kind.

Ayurveda also involves the concept of the seven Dhatu (tissues) and twenty Gunas (qualities or characteristics) which should also be taken into consideration while providing treatment.

Another Ayurvedic concept is that of “bheej-bhoomi” (seed-land) where the disease-causing organisms are seeds and the body is the land where they fall and take root. If the body is already contaminated by toxins or Ama and deficient in Ojas, infections occur.

Ama tends to build up in winter this is the reason why more respiratory infections occur. Ayurvedic medicine for cold and throat infection focus on burning Ama, providing panchakarma (cleansing) treatments, eating warming foods that increase Agni or fire, avoiding Ama increasing foods like leftovers, root vegetables, cold foods etc.

Lifestyle factors like sedentary life, laziness, etc can also contribute to recurrent infections.

Environmental factors like pollution and internal conditions like low metabolic fire (agni) and compromised immunity play a role in the body’s vulnerability.

Strengthening Ojas is another way to combat recurrent respiratory infections. Ojas has to be protected during certain crucial periods like convalescence, stressful times, seasonal change, life transitions, etc.

Adding immunity-boosting foods like garlic and ensuring adequate sleep are other important factors. Eating more salty, sour and sweet-tasting foods increases the appetite and promotes regular dietary routines. During late fall and early winter, it's important to increase the intake of Vata-pacifying foods, while late winter and early spring are the time to take more Kapha-pacifying foods.

Daily warm baths and massage, a healthy and regular exercise regimen with supportive daily routines and mindfulness practices can ensure that the ill-effects of dosha imbalance are countered.

Ayurveda also considers the mind-body connection and describes how thoughts and behaviors can affect health and Ojas. This is known as Achara Rasayana. Certain positive behaviors like happiness, peace, honesty, charity, avoiding anger and violence, hygiene and self-control, practicing meditation and mindfulness, love and compassion, balanced emotions, positivity and respect along with the right conduct can have a significant impact on Ojas.

Treatment for Vata-related coughs involves inhalation of medicated fumes. Kapha-related coughs are treated with oils infused with certain plant and ashes.
