Earlier, elderly people used to be the ones experiencing different types of joint-related pains. However, today the scenario has changed as young people are experiencing joint pain as well. A wide range of causes lead to joint-related problems. The most common joint problems are joint pain, inflammation, muscle pain, and stiffness. These make it difficult to move around peacefully and can hinder daily activities.

Causes Of Joint Related Concerns
The main causes of joint-related concerns such as inflammation, stiffness, pain, and arthritis are discussed below.

Acute arthritis has many causes and these depend on the type of arthritis. Any degenerative injury can lead to arthritis. There are certain types of infections, such as Lyme disease, can lead to acute arthritis. Abnormal metabolism is one of the major causes of acute arthritis since it can lead to gout. Dysfunction of the immune system causes arthritis. Certain foods can cause inflammation to increase in arthritis. A gout is a form of arthritis that is caused due to foods. Genes can increase arthritis risk as older people are prone to the condition.

Joint pain has numerous causes. It can occur due to certain infectious diseases such as hepatitis and mumps. Cancer can lead to joint pain. Rickets, fibromyalgia, and sarcoidosis are conditions that can cause severe joint pain. An injury can cause joint pain and the severity of the pain depends on intense the injury was. When the cushioning pads around the joints are inflamed, it can lead to joint pain. Inflamed tendons can lead to joint pain. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain. If you overuse a joint, then it can lead to joint pain too.

Muscle pain or myalgia is caused by overuse of muscles. It can be caused due to injuries and tension. If you have sprained yourself, then it can cause muscle pain. If you have an underactive thyroid then it can lead to myalgia. There are certain medications such as statins that can lead to muscle pain. Diseases that cause the muscle to become weak can cause pain to occur. Rheumatoid arthritis causes muscle pain. Other conditions that cause myalgia include dystonia, muscle cramps, chronic fatigue syndrome, influenza, lupus, and polymyalgia rheumatica.

Stiff joints have various causes. One of the causes is bone cancer in which the stiff joints are accompanied by pain. Lupus can cause joints to become stiff as it attacks the joints causing stiffness and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common cause of stiff joints and it affects the most number of people. It causes joint stiffness by attacking the joint linings accompanied by inflammation and pain. Stiff joints are caused by osteoarthritis, mostly in older people. Stiff joints can be caused by bursitis too.

Joint swelling is common and there are many causes. If the joints are dislocated, tendons have torn, or the bone has fractured, then it can lead to inflammation of the joints. Lupus can cause the joints to swell. Ankylosing spondylitis causes the joints to be inflamed. Ligaments that have torn due to some reason can cause swelling of the joints. Certain infections such as those caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi can cause joint swelling. Gout and psoriatic arthritis can cause the joints to swell. Other causes of joint swelling include rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Ayurveda’s View On Joint Health
In Ayurveda, there are two types of joint problems that occur and they are linked to particular vata and kapha dosha problems.

The first joint problem is caused due to vyana vata. This is a subdosha of vata. It is in charge of ensuring the proper working of the nerve impulses and circulation in the body. The joints are not properly nourished when there is an imbalance in this dosha. Another problem that can occur is low bone density. This causes the joints to become weaker. In the beginning, there might be some discomfort and there may even be a sound when the joints move signifying joint weakness. If the problem is not taken care of in the beginning then it can lead to bone degeneration.

In this vata imbalance, the ability to absorb food efficiently is affected. This leads to poor metabolism and circulation in the body causing further imbalance. When the vyana vata has an imbalance, the joint lubrication is affected. This is because the shleshaka kapha is affected when the metabolism, absorption, and circulation are weakened. This affects the movement of the joints and the main concern is the bone tissues being affected as a result. This bone degeneration can lead to many other bone problems that can be chronic.

To help heal this type of problem various things can be done. You should include a variety of flavours in food. It is best if you include sweet, salty, and sour tastes. You should avoid bitter, pungent, and astringent tasting foods. Having grains like quinoa, amaranth, and rye are recommended but make sure you add some ghee and cook them in water. You can have split moong dal soup, and include fresh fruits in your diet. A calcium-rich diet is recommended. You should include root vegetables as well.

When you have this problem, you should wake up before 6 in the morning and sleep before 10 at night. You should engage in mild exercise such as walking. You can walk for about half an hour each day. You should work on stress management techniques so that you are not stressed. If possible, you should have an oil massage. This helps alleviate joint-related issues such as stiffness and pain. You should try and have a calm mind at all times as this reduces stress and tension. You should avoid watching TV before you go to bed.

The second joint problem is caused due to an increase in the levels of toxins in the body. This problem is due to an increase of ama in the joints. This problem is associated with joint stiffness, inflammation, and pain. Cold weather or humid weather can aggravate this problem further. When there is an excess of ama, it eventually converts to amavisha. Amavisha causes the joint to inflame and causes pain. A sticky substance called shleshma is developed when ama mixes with the joint lubricants. This restricts joint movement and negatively impacts the joint circulation.

When the ama, amavisha, and shelshma are present in the joint for a long time then they can cause long-term damage to the joint. To alleviate the symptoms of this problem, you can think about cleansing. This helps support agni and decreases the ama level. Eating warm, dry, and light foods is recommended to reduce the symptoms of this problem. You should focus on eating foods that are easy to digest and foods that are freshly cooked. You can further balance the dosha by adding spices that promote digestion. Vigorous exercise and avoiding afternoon nap are recommended.
