Infertility can cause a plethora of problems and grievances in someones respective life. We are biologically designed and wired to survive and reproduce. It is embedded within us to pass our genes on and carry our legacy forward to the coming generations. It is predominantly a young man’s or woman’s yearning to achieve the above as they come of age. Conceiving children is considered a rite to passage to the next stage of life in a myriad of societies and communities around the world. With this much value and importance being placed on the ability to reproduce and conceive a child, it is very much understandable how an individual can feel dejected and depressed because of infertility issues.
Especially in our society of India where marriage and children play key part in an individuals status and reputation in their respective communities. The knowledge of someone’s infertility could potentially result in them becoming a laughing stock or a social outcast resulting in embarrassment whether it be a man or a woman. The further consequences can weigh someone down mentally until it becomes detrimental to their overall well being.
We will be looking at ways to resolve the above issue and concern in this article. It is important to note that this issue is not unique to recent times and has been an issue for many centuries. Because of the same, many of our ancestors have explored different ways to resolve and combat infertility. They have achieved this resolve through Ayurveda. Ayurveda has helped combat this issue for more than a millennia.
Symptoms
Apart from the obvious problem of the inability to conceive a child, a lot of symptoms might not be obvious or on the surface. It might be the result of an inherited disorder, dilated veins around the testicle, a hormonal imbalance or a condition which causes blockage of sperm. Decreased facial or body hair is a sign of chromosomal or hormonal imbalance. A lower sperm count than the usual norm is the most common indication of infertility issues in men.
For women, it can range from problems with ovulation, damage to fallopian tubes and also their age. As age increases fertility in women will decrease.
Medical Causes for Men
- Varicocele: A varicocele is a swelling of the veins that drain the testicle. It's the most common reversible cause of male infertility. Varicoceles result in reduced quality of the sperm.
- Infection: Some infections can interfere with sperm production or sperm health or can cause scarring that blocks the passage of sperm.
- Ejaculation issues: Retrograde ejaculation occurs when semen enters the bladder during orgasm instead of emerging out the tip of the penis. Various health conditions can cause retrograde ejaculation, including diabetes, spinal injuries, medications, and surgery of the bladder, prostate or urethra.
- Tumors: Cancers and nonmalignant tumours can affect the male reproductive organs directly, through the glands that release hormones related to reproduction.
- Hormone imbalances: Infertility can result from disorders of the testicles themselves or an abnormality affecting other hormonal systems including the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands. Low testosterone (male hypogonadism) and other hormonal problems have a number of possible underlying causes.
- Problems with sexual intercourse: These can include trouble keeping or maintaining an erection sufficient for sex (erectile dysfunction), premature ejaculation, painful intercourse, anatomical abnormalities such as having a urethral opening beneath the penis (hypospadias), or psychological or relationship problems that interfere with sex.
Overexposure to certain environmental elements such as heat, toxins and chemicals can reduce sperm production or sperm function.
Specific causes include:
- Industrial chemicals. Extended exposure to benzenes, toluene, xylene, pesticides, herbicides, organic solvents, painting materials and lead may contribute to low sperm counts.
- Heavy metal exposure. Exposure to lead or other heavy metals also may cause infertility.
- Radiation or X-rays. Exposure to radiation can reduce sperm production, though it will often eventually return to normal. With high doses of radiation, sperm production can be permanently reduced.
- Overheating the testicles. Elevated temperatures impair sperm production and function. Although studies are limited and are inconclusive, frequent use of saunas or hot tubs may temporarily impair your sperm count.
Sitting for long periods, wearing tight clothing or working on a laptop computer for long stretches of time also may increase the temperature in your scrotum and may slightly reduce sperm production.
Some other causes of male infertility include:
- Drug use. Anabolic steroids taken to stimulate muscle strength and growth can cause the testicles to shrink and sperm production to decrease. Use of cocaine or marijuana may temporarily reduce the number and quality of your sperm as well.
- Alcohol use. Drinking alcohol can lower testosterone levels, cause erectile dysfunction and decrease sperm production. Liver disease caused by excessive drinking also may lead to fertility problems.
- Tobacco smoking. Men who smoke may have a lower sperm count than do those who don't smoke. Secondhand smoke also may affect male fertility.
- Emotional stress. Stress can interfere with certain hormones needed to produce sperm. Severe or prolonged emotional stress, including problems with fertility, can affect your sperm count.
- Depression. Research shows that the likelihood of pregnancy may be lower if a male partner has severe depression. In addition, depression in men may cause sexual dysfunction due to reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, or delayed or inhibited ejaculation.
- Weight. Obesity can impair fertility in several ways, including directly impacting sperm themselves as well as by causing hormone changes that reduce male fertility.
Issues with ovulation can stem from :
- Hormonal Imbalance
- Tumour/Cyst
- Eating Disorders
- Alcohol/Drug
- Excess weight
- Stress
- Brief Menstrual Cycles
- Pelvic Inflammatory disease
- Scar Tissue or adhesions
- A Birth defect
Ayurveda Treatment
From the perspective of Ayurveda, preparing for conception can be associated with farming. In the sense that the health of a crop depends highly on the quality of soil, seed, the timing of sowing and the amount of water it gets. For a successful pregnancy, a couple has to consider the below factors carefully.
Sperm/Ovum (Seeds)
Uterus (Soil)
Nourishment (Water)
Time for Conception (Timing of Sowing)
Infertility treatment in Ayurveda aims at reinstating the normal health of the reproductive health, in both men and women, depends on the health of the reproductive tissue or shukra dhatu. In women, shukra creates the ovum as part of the monthly cycle, and in men the semen is formed due to sexual stimulation. The shukra is created as part of a long chain of metabolic transformations. It starts with the digestion of food, then goes on to transformation of food to nutrient fluid, b0lood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and finally, to shukra tissue. Healthy shukra tissue, then, according to Ayurveda, depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body.
This leads us to the conclusion that the Ayurveda treatment of infertility is predominantly if not completely based on dietary management.
