Bronchitis is a lung disease that can either manifest in an acute form that lasts for a few days or can be chronic lasting for many months or years. It is a disorder that causes inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes or airways. Acute bronchitis usually occurs along with a cold or sore throat. Chronic bronchitis is a long-term problem. Bronchitis causes coughing where mucus is expelled. Sometimes mucus may contain blood. It can also lead to wheezing and difficulty breathing. Fever and tiredness are other associated symptoms of bronchitis.
Ayurveda’s view of bronchitis
Bronchitis, as per Ayurveda, is due to the accumulation of excess phlegm and toxins. It is referred to as tamaka shwasa. In Ayurveda, the belief is that diseases occur due to the production of toxins that cause an imbalance in doshas. Of the three doshas, it is the Kapha dosha that is associated with bronchitis. The abundance of Kapha may cause the formation of mucus.
Mucus accumulates in the airways due to toxins. This blocks the bronchial tubes, making a smooth flow of air difficult. As a result, the body tries to expel the mucus by coughing. Excess mucus can make the airways narrow causing difficulty in breathing. This can lead to wheezing and asthma. Kapha dosha imbalance can occur due to overeating or eating cold and oily food. Mucus usually is white.
The Vata dosha may be imbalanced due to physical strain or mental stress. A diet that is dry and cold can also cause imbalance. As a result, it leads to dry cough with difficulty in expelling mucus. Bronchitis due to Vata imbalance can even cause weight loss and emaciation.
Pitta dosha imbalance is mainly caused by exposure to allergens or a viral infection. This causes inflammation of the bronchial tubes. The mucus may be green or yellow in color. It can also cause digestive problems.
Ayurveda bronchitis medicine makes use of tulsi (holy basil), Vasaka, turmeric, Bala, Long pepper, Ginger, Malabar nut, and honey. These medicines may be given individually or may be administered in the form of a Rasayana or mixture.
Apart from medication, those suffering from bronchitis need to keep the following in mind:
- Exposure to cold wind or rain should be avoided.
- Cold water, ice cream, cold foods, and sour food should be avoided.
- Too much physical exertion should be avoided.
- Exercise should be done in moderation to prevent the worsening of symptoms. Yoga is advisable.
- Meditation to get relief from stress and tension.
Causes of bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is caused due to viral infections. It usually comes along with the flu or common cold. Low bodily immunity can increase the chances of suffering from bronchitis. Acute bronchitis does not need specific treatment. Symptoms can be treated if they increase. Since it is a viral infection, antibiotics are of no use.
Acute bronchitis usually goes off on its own after a few days or a week. It can be treated in the same way as a cold is treated. Drinking warm fluids, rest, avoiding cold foods, and keeping warm is helpful in treating the acute form of bronchitis.
Chronic bronchitis is where the symptoms of bronchitis do not go away even after three weeks or more. It is possible that one can have symptoms of bronchitis on and off for many weeks together. Chronic bronchitis can happen due to reasons like:
Smoking cigarettes is the prime reason for chronic bronchitis. The smoke can lead to inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Chronic bronchitis may also occur due to an allergy. It can occur along with asthma and can be because of pollution, chemicals, or exposure to any allergens.
Those who are aged are more at risk of developing chronic bronchitis. People with a weak immune system are more prone to suffering from repeated attacks of acute bronchitis, which in turn could lead to chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis may be related to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and meeting a doctor is advisable.
