Vyoshadi vati(also called Vyoshadi vatakam & Vyoshadi Gutika) is an ayurvedic medicine used for respiratory and digestive disorders. It is main medicine for the common cold in Ayurveda and really helpful for relieving nasal inflammation, discharge, congestion and irritation. It is also useful in allergic rhinitis, sneezing, cough, and breathing troubles (asthma). It improves appetite and increases the desire to eat, so it can also be given in cases of anorexia.

Benefits & Medicinal Uses of vyoshadi vati
Vyoshadi vati reduces inflammation of the nasal cavity, sinuses, and respiratory tract. Additionally, it improves appetite and digestion. If fever occurs along with respiratory problems, then it also reduces body pains occurring due to fever by helping digestion of formed AMA.
Common Cold
In the common cold, Vyoshadi vati is more beneficial in the initial stage when the patient has a runny nose, sneezing, congestion and nasal irritation. It reduces inflammation and irritation of the nasal mucosa, which gives relief from the most of the common cold symptoms. It can be used in dosage of one teaspoon thrice daily during acute onset of the coryza.
Sinusitis
Vyoshadi vati also reduces infection and inflammation of the tissue lining of the sinuses. Ingredients like Trikatu, Chitrak etc. help to reduce the blockage caused by fluid or germs. It may act as bacteriostatic and may prevent the growth of germs in the sinuses. Along with nasal instillation of Shadbindu Oil, it helps to treat sinusitis.
Sore Throat
Vyoshadi Vati is used as lozenges for a sore throat in Northern India. It is a common medicine prescribed for a sore throat. It reduces irritation, throat pain, and cough associated with a sore throat. It is more beneficial when throat and tongue has white coating, or itchy, and has no burning sensation.
Dosage
- 3 – 6 grams once or two times a day after food or before food, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
- It is administered along with honey or warm water.
- Usually this medicine is available in granule or tablet form.
Precaution
All available Vyoshadi formulations are considerably safe and well-tolerated in most individuals when these are taken in the recommended dosage under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician. Vyoshadi formulations are likely to work on Vata and Kapha Dosha. In higher dosage, Vyoshadi vati may increase Pitta Dosha in the body, which may result in following side effects.
In Pregnancy
Vyoshadi formulations contain Chitrak, which is contraindicated in pregnancy because it may induce bleeding when used in higher dosage. However, the amount of Chitrak used in the Vyoshadi formulation is insignificant to cause any issue when Vyoshadi is taken for a short-term (less than a week) in dosage less than 3 grams per day. It should be avoided when other better alternatives are available.
During Lactation
Lactating mothers can use the Vyoshadi formulations in the recommended dosage under professional supervision. It is likely safe for both lactating mothers as well as the breastfeeding child.
There are no absolute contraindications for Vyoshadi formulations, but people with bleeding disorders should avoid it. Some ingredients in it may increase the chances of bleeding. It should also be avoided 2 weeks prior to the surgery and up to 2 weeks after the surgery. Patients with frequent mouth ulcers should also avoid it. It may increase burning pain in the ulcers.
