Ayurvedic Perspective On Upper Respiratory Tract Disorders

  • Ayurveda terms problems with breathing as "Swasa Roga".
  • The Doshas that regulate proper breathing are the Vata and Kapha Doshas.
  • Vata Dosha is cold, rough and dry in nature. The Kapha Dosha is cold, heavy and slimy. When these two Doshas are formed in the digestive system and the Kledaka Kapha, it affects the lungs. The lungs get blocked and clogged. (Dr. to clarify and help articulate better)
  • To reduce excessive Kapha, the Pitta Dosha has to be increased in the body to decongest the respiratory system.
  • Since the lung problem originates in the digestive system, the treatment starts by ensuring proper support of the digestive fire Agni.
  • When the Agni in the body is inadequate it causes a range of problems due to improper digestion. Improper digestion causes the formation of Ama.
  • Bronchial asthma is called Tamaka Swasa and is caused by excessive Kapha Dosha aggravating foods, suppression of natural urges, excessive exercise or sexual activity, cold climate, allergens or physical trauma to the throat or chest.
  • The food intake when one has a cough or cold also has to be as per the advice of an Ayurvedic doctor so as to balance the Doshas.
  • Upper respiratory tract problems can also be caused by allergic reactions or infections.
  • The prescription of Ayurvedic medicines might also be accompanied by breathing exercises and diet advice. Thaleesapathra Choornam is one such formulation that is an Ayurvedic medicine that can help in the treatment of running nose and ease coughing.
  • Ayurveda has a holistic approach to health. Ayurveda defines five Koshas (meaning sheaths) in a person; the Anamaya Kosha (the physical body), Manomaya Kosha (the mind), Vijnanamaya Kosha (the psyche), Pranaymaya Kosha (the breath body), and the Anandamay Kosha (the bliss body). A balance between these Koshas is the key to good health.
  • There is a strong link between the Koshas and the condition of asthma. The inability to breathe that characterises asthma is the blockage of the Prana. The physical body becomes unable to breathe and is linked to the psyche and the bliss body.
  • When a person has negative feelings, anger and too much stress it can aggravate symptoms of cold, cough and asthma. In Ayurveda, It is considered important to be de-stressed and in a positive frame of mind to be healthy.

Upper Respiratory Tract Problems

The first place where the viruses that cause flu and colds attach is the lining of the nose. This causes inflammation and the subsequent symptoms of running nose and sneezing. A cough is a reflexive action that the body makes to expel some foreign particles or irritants that have gone into the airway.  When there is an infection, the lining of the airways gets affected leading to cough. Mucus formation irritates the nerve endings in the airways and leads to a productive cough. Inflammation of the bronchial tubes causes a condition called bronchitis. It is usually caused by viruses. An infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses is called pneumonia. Asthma usually is accompanied by dry cough but in some patients, there is an excessive mucus formation that causes wet cough. There is no cure for asthma in Western medicine. There are two types of asthma; T2 high or non-T2 ( or T2 low). T2 type of asthma is usually due to allergies and is called allergic or eosinophilic asthma. It is generally hereditary and improves as children get older. The T1 type of asthma is rarer than the T2 and is harder to treat.

It manages asthma through inhaled doses of corticosteroids to control inflammation. To ease breathing a long-acting bronchodilator (LABA) is prescribed while mucus production is controlled by anticholinergic agents or antimuscarinic agents. Doctors also prescribe systemic steroids. Colds and coughs are treated with anti-inflammatory medicine, decongestants, cough suppressants and expectorants.
